Professor Gilly Salmon is one of the best-known writers about online learning. She has published books such as E-Moderating, which are very useful in looking at the role of the teacher. In that book, she argued that to help learners to gain the most from an online course, you have to consider a five-stage model.
You can read about the model on her website: http://www.gillysalmon.com/five-stage-model.html
Look at the model and consider where you see yourself at the moment. What did the tutor put into place (or not!) to guide you through the stages?
